Few thousand years ago in Egypt, people used leaves and feathers as fan material and
mounted them into a long handle. This was the most beginning of hand fan. Peple used them to cool themselves, drive away insets, block out sunlight, and so on. Because hand fans are
so elegant and eye-catching, Egypt nobles used them so frequently so that they became the symbols of royalty and power shortly after.
Almost at the same time, In China, people discovered the same way to make oriental hand fans as Egypt people did but mounted them into a much shorter handle instead so that hand fan could be carried around and used much more easily to help strengthen fire for making ceramics. Later they also improved the hand fan with bamboo, silk and paper. That was when a traditional Chinese fan was born. Chinese artists also used hand fan as a method to express themselves by painting and writing poem on it. In China, hand fan also symbolized many things like well education, accomplishment, high social status, beauty, happyness, and event feminism.
Japanese people made the first folding fan around 8th century B.C. Japanese fan also became the symble of loyalty, honesty, high social status, and self-sacrifice. Soon afterwards, Asian fan spreaded to Europe and the whole world.
